KOLKATA: Deportivo Alaves recently appointed Abelardo Fernandez as their coach and the former FC Barcelona player is happy to be back in charge of the La Liga side.
"I feel confident to get into this project and I really appreciate that the club thought about me. I am happy to be here again and will try my best to achieve great results and realise the goals for Deportivo Alaves," Fernandez said in quotes shared by La Liga.
The 50-year old had enjoyed a good spell during his time as coach of Alaves between 2017 and 2019 but says this will be a completely fresh start.

"Every situation is different... I start from zero now. I live in the present. I can’t be thinking about the year and a half I spent here that worked so well. I know some of the players in the squad and others I don’t. But, I’ve watched all of Alaves’ games this season," he added. "The most important thing is to be competitive in every game. We have to work hard in every training session. I believe that the team can be competitive and achieve great things and the results to stay in La Liga next season."
The matches are currently being held without supporters owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Like everyone, Fernandez feels sad about the situation.
"It’s a shame that, due to the pandemic, the fans can’t be here. They are extremely important for Alaves and there is no doubt that the fans helped the team win some games. But, I have to ask them to take care of themselves. They can enjoy the team from home and I can tell them that the team is going to work hard and give their 100 per cent."
